New Zealand have been running the numbers on India's 15-year-old batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi ahead of the five-match Twenty20 series that begins Thursday at Christchurch's Hagley Oval, with paceman Jacob Duffy confirming the hosts have built a specific plan around the teenager. The series marks the opening leg of a bumper India tour of New Zealand that will also feature one-day internationals and a two-test series.

A Teenager Rewriting Record Books

Sooryavanshi's rise has been rapid and loud. He smashed a string of records during the Indian Premier League before becoming India's youngest men's international with his debut in the T20 series in England in July. After a quiet start against England, he became the youngest player to score a half-century in men's international cricket, reaching fifty off just 18 balls against Zimbabwe. He followed that up with an Asian Games gold medal in Japan as India swept to the T20 title in Aichi-Nagoya, cementing his status as one of the sport's most talked-about young talents.

Duffy: "Incredible Talent" But Conditions Could Bite

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Duffy was unequivocal about the scale of the challenge Sooryavanshi presents. "First of all, he's an incredible talent. Obviously, he's taken the IPL by storm and what's amazing, he strikes it so hard but he does it so consistently," he said. "He's striking at 250 (strike-rate) every game and he's not missing out very often. So that's incredible in itself." Duffy noted that Sooryavanshi's previous international experience came in England, meaning the seam and bounce typical of New Zealand pitches will represent a fresh examination. "I think he played in England, so conditions will be a little bit different for him, so that's obviously one thing for him to be challenged with. We've certainly had a good scouting session on him and got our plans as to what we want to do to him."

Hagley Oval Wicket in Focus

Duffy revealed he had already spoken with Hagley Oval's head groundsman about pitch expectations, hopeful the surface will offer something other than the flat, batter-friendly decks often associated with the subcontinent. "He's from Invercargill, so he's promised me a little bit of bounce," said Duffy, who grew up near the South Island city. "As long as it's not Hyderabad, I'm happy." The comment underlines New Zealand's broader strategy of using home conditions as a leveller against India's most explosive strokeplayers.

Duffy's Breakout Year

The series arrives at the peak of a career-best year for Duffy. The Otago seamer was named New Zealand's top player in 2025, winning the Sir Richard Hadlee Medal, reached the final of this year's T20 World Cup on Indian soil, and lifted the IPL title with Royal Challengers Bengaluru. He made his test debut last year at 31 but missed New Zealand's mid-year tour of England and the one-off test against Ireland to be present for the birth of his first child. That absence, he said, has sharpened his appetite for red-ball cricket against India ahead of a four-test tour of Australia later in the season. "I've played four tests in my life. I get up for any test. There's something special about them," Duffy said.
