Elon's women's tennis team made a strong first impression at the ITA Carolina Regionals, collecting five singles victories on Thursday at the Carolina Tennis Center in Columbia, South Carolina. The tournament, hosted by South Carolina, drew a wide field of regional programs, and the Phoenix wasted little time making their presence felt in the qualifying draw.

Four Players Advance Through Opening Round

Iga Piotrowska delivered the standout performance of the day, blanking Queens' Mathilde Bris 6-0, 6-0 to reach the qualifying final round without dropping a single game. She was joined in the final round by three teammates who also won in straight sets: Mariana Reding defeated Western Carolina's Thalia Smith 6-1, 7-5, Lisa Dierick got past Appalachian State's Allegra Hodson 6-2, 7-5, and Alexandria Warsing handled Furman's Macy Hitchcock 6-2, 6-3. All four ultimately fell in the final qualifying round against opponents from Charlotte, Wake Forest, Coastal Carolina and North Carolina, but the run underscored the depth Elon brought into the event.

Nyborg Bounces Back in Consolation Draw

Not every match went Elon's way in the opening round. Alexis Nyborg suffered a tough three-set defeat to Wake Forest's Lillian Santos, 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (2), while Lisa Kranec and Sonja Rooth also dropped close contests to North Carolina's Mary Grace Rennard and Charlotte's Emma Montebello, respectively. Nyborg responded quickly, dispatching Charleston's Paula Dougherty 6-0, 6-2 in the consolation draw to salvage a positive day. Kranec and Rooth both saw their consolation matches end early due to retirements from their opponents, Furman's Molly Robinson and East Carolina's Zelie Bretin.

Bergeron and Kack Set for Main Draw Friday

Elon will have two representatives in the tournament's main singles draw on Friday. Simone Bergeron opens against NC State's Georgia Cranford at approximately 10:30 a.m., followed by Cornelia Kack's matchup with Charlotte's Elizabeth Ivanov around 11:30 a.m. Both matches offer the Phoenix a chance to test themselves against ranked ACC competition early in the fall slate.

Doubles Action Begins Friday Afternoon

Elon's doubles contingent will also see its first main-draw action Friday, with four pairings set to compete. The Phoenix's opening doubles match is scheduled for roughly 2:30 p.m. Combined with the singles results, the day should give Elon's coaching staff a clearer picture of where the program stands heading into the heart of the fall season.
