Tiger Woods, the American golfer and 15-time major champion,[2] was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence on May 29, 2017, in Palm Beach County, Florida.[2]

Deputies responded to reports of a vehicle driving erratically and found Woods asleep at the wheel of his Mercedes-Benz with the engine running and taillights illuminated on a side road in The Landings neighborhood near Jupiter.[1][2]

Woods showed signs of impairment during field sobriety tests. A breathalyzer registered 0.00, but a blood toxicology test later detected hydrocodone, hydromorphone, alprazolam and THC.[2]

On his SiriusXM show the following day, sports commentator Stephen A. Smith said compassion was running out for Woods, suggesting he had issues with drugs, likely pain medications.[1]

"My brother, you got issues with drugs, and I personally suspect. Stephen A. Smith urges Tiger Woods to stop driving after 2017 DUI arrest .. that it’s pain meds. What I don’t understand is this tendency to get behind the damn wheel of a car," Smith said.[1]

"You’re a billionaire, bro. You can afford car service. We are very fortunate that Tiger Woods hasn’t killed somebody yet," he added.[1]

Woods apologized in a statement, attributing the incident to an unexpected reaction to prescribed medications.[2]

On October 27, 2017, Woods entered a plea of guilty to reckless driving. The DUI charge was dropped, and he was placed on one year of probation with 50 hours of community service.[2]
