Caitlin Clark, the Indiana Fever guard and 2024 WNBA Rookie of the Year, was named most valuable player of a FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2026 qualifying tournament after averaging 11.6 points and 6.4 assists per game.[1][2] The American made her senior national team debut in the event held in March 2026, helping the United States to a perfect 5-0 record with wins over Senegal, Puerto Rico, Italy, New Zealand and Spain.[1][3]
Clark scored 17 points, including four 3-pointers, in the opener against Senegal.[2][4] Team USA defeated Puerto Rico 85-72 on March 12 in San Juan.[1][3]
Clark's performance came after an injury-shortened 2025 WNBA season in which she appeared in 13 games for the Fever, averaging 16.5 points, 8.8 assists and 5.0 rebounds.[2][5] She suffered a groin strain ahead of the All-Star break and later a bone bruise in her ankle, prompting the Fever to rule her out for the remainder of the regular season.[4][5]
"I've always been a person that's going to just rely on my work. I feel like it's certainly made me work harder," Clark said earlier in March 2026, referring to her recovery.[2][4] She added that she had invested significant preparation time before playing only 13 games.
The award marks Clark's second MVP honor on the international stage, following her recognition at the 2021 FIBA U19 Women’s Basketball World Cup.[3][6]
The FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup is scheduled for September 4-13, 2026.[1][3]
