In the second round of the NCAA Division I women's basketball tournament, Maryland Terrapins head coach Brenda Frese had a nose-to-nose exchange with starting guard Oluchi Okananwa during a 74-66 loss to the North Carolina Tar Heels on March 22, 2026, at the Dean Smith Center in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.[1][2]

Maryland entered as the No. 5 seed in their region, while North Carolina was the No. 4 seed in a matchup typical of the 32-team second round.[1][2]

The confrontation came in the third quarter after Okananwa turned the ball over, missed three free throws and missed a layup. Frese subbed her out and met her at the sideline, saying, "I believe in you, but you got to want this moment."[1][3]

Okananwa led Maryland with 21 points, six rebounds, two steals and six turnovers.[1][2]

Postgame, Okananwa said she appreciated the coaching intensity. "Coach understands I’m a competitor at heart," she said. "I’ve told her this before... I love to be coached hard. That’s what she does with me every single day."[1][4]

Frese, who has coached the Terrapins since the 2002-03 season,[5] described the moment as a challenge born of belief in Okananwa's talent. "We do, at times, have to have those tough conversations... The best of the best... want to be coached hard."[1][3]

The Chicago native Okananwa was in her first season at Maryland after two years at Duke. She averaged 17.7 points, 5.4 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game and earned All-Big Ten Conference honors in 2025-26.[6][7]

North Carolina advanced to the Sweet 16 with the victory, ending Maryland's season.[1][2]
