Ex-Nebraska coach admits sex with former player

Chuck Love, former associate head coach of Nebraska's women's basketball team, admitted in a February deposition to a sexual relationship with ex-player Ashley Scoggin before her 2022 team dismissal, court filings show. Love had previously denied the allegations. The admission came in a civil lawsuit Scoggin filed this year against Love and university officials.

Scoggin accused Love of taking a special interest in her that turned sexual, leading her to fear retaliation. Teammates found her fully clothed in Love's room during a road trip, prompting her dismissal days later on the same day Love received a paid suspension in February 2022. Love resigned three months later; Scoggin, from Dallas, Oregon, transferred to UNLV after two seasons with the Cornhuskers.

The lawsuit names as co-defendants the University of Nebraska Board of Regents, head coach Amy Williams and former athletic director Trev Alberts, alleging they failed to implement safeguards, rules or training against staff-student-athlete relationships. Williams and Alberts responded that they lacked sufficient information to admit or deny the relationship claims, while endorsing Love's initial denial, according to Scoggin's attorney. A March 17 filing detailed Love's deposition admission on Feb. 5 after his earlier denials of seeking sexual relationships, inappropriate discussions or drink invitations with students.

The university stated Scoggin's removal stemmed from dishonesty and distrust with teammates.
